Day 19, Tuesday , September 10th, 2019: Calzadilla de la Cueza to Sahagún

Jean told us the day before that the Albergue Camino Real has the best breakfast on The Camino. And he was right! Knowing we only had about 13.3 miles today, we stayed for breakfast at 7 and it was indeed the best! Fried eggs, bacon, croissants and coffee we could pour ourselves! A great start to the day!

We bid our friends a “Buen Camino” and headed off into the dawn. The walk today was as beautiful as many, with harvested fields and bright sunshine. Few hills and small villages made the path interesting and uncomplicated.

We arrived to the geographical mid-point of The Camino (if measured from Roncesvalles to Santiago de Compostela) and received a stamp on our credential at the Ermita Virgen del Puente at the entrance to Sahagún.

We walked another mile to our Albergue Domus Viatoris and checked in. We showered and changed and walked around the city. We happened upon our wonderfully reoccurring friends Makayla and Geoff, and had lunch with them at their Albergue.

Of course, by the time lunch ended, the town was in siesta, so we wandered about and looked at the ruins of churches and monasteries and met a young man named Anton who had begun his Camino in Krakow, Poland! What a walk!

Dinner found us with our friends from yesterday and a new friend, Susan, from Louisiana. She had had a big day of walking and shared her story and learnings of The Camino with us.

Today’s “Camino Lesson” is from something she said:  be kind and thoughtful in your speaking with others and try to listen more than you speak.

Someone once said we have two ears and one mouth and we should use them in proportion. On The Camino, people seem to be more thoughtful and respectful as they interact with new friends. It truly is a special experience that we are sharing, but so is life. I find myself listening more to those around me and asking questions because I am truly interested in what people have to say.

I hope you can be more listener than talker the next time you get together with friends.

Buen Camino!

Happy morning!
