Day 20, Wednesday, September 11th, 2019: Sahagún to El Burgo Ranero

Last night ended with a late call to our son, US Army Specialist James Pollhein. We were saying our goodbyes as today, on the anniversary of the terrorist attack on our country in 2001, our son is headed to Afghanistan to do his duty. Needless to say, we had much to occupy our minds as we walked today. Please keep him in your prayers.

We had a nice breakfast with Jean and a new friend, Christopher, from Ireland. Then it was off for a short 12 miles to El Burgo Ranero.

We ran into our friends Joe and Anna from Nova Scotia. Seems her foot is not doing well, but they were in good spirits. We found out they were heading to the same Albergue we were. We bade them Buen Camino and hoped to meet for dinner.

We stopped for coffee in Berciano del Real Camino and caught up with our Australian friend Jess. She’s doing well and has planned to go teach English in Asia as her next adventure. She’s a very sharp young lady and we know she will do well wherever she decides to go.

Arriving around noon to our Albergue, La Laguna, we dropped our gear and changed to our sandals and went to find the Pharmacia, where we found Terri a new set of inserts for her hiking shoes. Lunch was a hamburger and patatas bravas (fried potatoes) and a beer. The paella looked like good dinner fare, so decided to head back there around 7 for dinner.

Back to the Albergue for a mid-afternoon siesta, which has become my favorite part of the day! And that is the inspiration for today’s “Camino Lesson:” Getting enough rest is critical to meeting life’s challenges. I have found that those naps combined with a healthy (mostly!) dinner and a solid night’s rest is critical to meeting the challenge every day on The Camino. The same can be said for our lives every day.

Dinner was a lovely Paella and grilled vegetables at La Costa del Adobe! Then back to the Albergue for good night’s rest.
