Day 30, Saturday , September 21st, 2019: Las Herrerias to Fonfria
So we got to sleep in a bit and had a light breakfast before heading down to the Al Paso stables and meeting Victor Echevarria who has been taking folks to O’Cebreiro on horseback for the last 6 years. Great person with an awesome personality. There were 4 other Peregrinos riding today and we soon headed out to the top of the mountain. I was on the lead horse, Bonnie, who liked to stop occasionally for a bite of grass. Terri was second on Carlotta, who farted loudly and often all the way up the mountain!
The ride up into the clouds was amazing and eventually pretty wet and windy as we approached the top. It was an experience I will never forget!
Once we reached the top, Victor took us to the Hotel O’Cebreiro for a warm cup of coffee and a light lunch of octopus pinxos. Very tasty! He seems to enjoy the company of we Peregrinos and gave us some tips on where to get great eats in towns further along the way.
We ran into Don and Laurel and Will and Marlene, who had walked up the mountain and were staying at the hotel. It was good to see them all again and we promised to connect when we all reach Santiago.
As fun as the morning was, we still had to walk 7.5 miles to our Albergue. It was very hilly mountain terrain...and the rain never let up. In fact, it rained harder and the wind was fiercer the further we went. It was miserable. But, we made it.
So today’s “Camino Lesson:” ya gotta take the good with the bad. I had the best time of the Camino in the morning on the horseback ride up, and the worst time of the Camino on the miserable afternoon walk in the cold and the rain and the wind. When the day is done, I won’t let the bad spoil the good. You shouldn’t either. Thank God for both as He will never give you more than you can handle.
So we dried our clothes and our shoes and headed off to dinner at 6pm
