Day 31, Sunday, September 22nd, 2019: Fonfría to Sarria
Into a howling gale, we set off at 6am from the mountain that Fonfría sits upon on our way to Sarria. For two hours we walked in the darkness, and the wind. Thankfully, no rain! The wind, however, was indeed howling at 20-25 mph. As we descended, it lessened a bit, but was still present for most of the day.
We stopped for desayuno in Triacastela and enjoyed the warmup after 5 very cold miles. Then it was on to Sarria, another 11 miles for the day.
We reached our accommodations at the Pension Rua Peregrinos on the outskirts of Sarria and decided to go have lunch. We went to a “Pulperia” and had a most delicious lunch of octopus, red wine and bread. A “Pulperia” is a place where they pretty much only serve octopus! It was wonderful!
Returning to the Pension, it was time to clean up and take a well-earned nap!
Pretty much how most mornings look for us on The Camino!
A Galician valley en la manana
Scallop shells and burdens left at a “hippie” rest stop along the way.
From Sarria on, the Camino gets crowded with Peregrinos who are only doing the last 100km. Technically, it’s all you need to do to obtain a Compostela in Santiago, so most only walk from here. We hearty few have walked the entire Camino, something we were blessed to have the time and fortitude to do that many cannot.
Octopus, anyone?
